llms.txt: Useful AI Standard or Another SEO Distraction?

TL;DR

  • llms.txt is a simple file designed to help AI agents understand and navigate a website.
  • It should sit at the root of the domain, such as example.com/llms.txt.
  • The file usually contains a short description of the website and links to its most important pages.
  • There is no evidence that adding it improves rankings, citations, or brand mentions in ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, or Perplexity.
  • Some AI agents, including tools used with Claude Code and other coding assistants, do use it to find documentation and retrieve content.
  • It may become more useful as AI agents become more common, but its impact on model training and long-term brand recall remains speculative.

What is an llms.txt file?

llms.txt is a proposed standard that gives AI tools a simple, structured overview of a website.

You can think of it as a guide written specifically for AI agents. Instead of crawling through menus, scripts, design elements, and hundreds of pages, an agent can open one file and quickly identify the most useful content on the site.

It is similar in concept to a sitemap, but the purpose is different. A sitemap lists URLs for search engines. An llms.txt file is meant to explain what a website is about and direct AI tools toward its most important resources.

Where should it be located?

The file should be placed at the root of the website:

https://example.com/llms.txt

It should be publicly accessible as a plain text or Markdown file.

There is also an optional format called llms-full.txt, which can contain more complete website or documentation content. However, for most businesses, a short and well-organized llms.txt file is more practical.

What should it contain?

The file should be simple and useful. It normally includes:

  • The name of the business, website, or project
  • A short explanation of what it does
  • Links to the most important pages
  • A short description next to each link
  • Optional sections for products, services, documentation, FAQs, company information, or policies

For an ecommerce brand, this could include links to major product collections, best-selling products, shipping information, FAQs, brand information, and customer support pages.

The goal is not to list every page. The file should point AI tools toward the content that best explains the business and its products.

Does llms.txt improve AI visibility?

At the moment, there is no reliable evidence that adding an llms.txt file will increase how often a brand appears in ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, or other AI-generated answers.

There is also no evidence that it acts as a ranking factor, improves citation rates, or helps a website appear more frequently in AI recommendations.

Google has explicitly said that its search systems, including AI Overviews and AI Mode, do not use llms.txt. OpenAI, Anthropic, and Perplexity document their web crawlers and robots.txt controls, but none currently identifies llms.txt as a signal for search visibility or citations.

Recent analyses of crawler activity also show that most llms.txt files receive very little traffic from AI bots.

So adding the file should not be treated as a shortcut to better AI visibility.

Do any AI tools actually use it?

Yes, but mostly in a more specific context.

Some AI agents and coding assistants use llms.txt to navigate technical documentation. Claude Code, for example, can retrieve these files when documentation or agent instructions direct it to them. Google, GitHub, LangChain, and other developer platforms also publish or support llms.txt files for agent-based documentation workflows.

This means the file has a real use. It can help an AI agent find the right page faster, understand how documentation is organized, and retrieve cleaner information without crawling an entire website.

However, this is different from a general-purpose AI assistant automatically checking every website for an llms.txt file.

In most cases, the agent needs to know that the file exists or be instructed to use it.

Could it help with future model training?

Possibly, but this is much less certain.

An AI agent may use llms.txt during a live session to find content. That content is placed temporarily into the agent’s context so it can complete a task. This does not automatically mean the information will be used to train the next version of the model.

Training crawlers, search crawlers, and user-directed AI agents are usually separate systems. There is currently no public evidence that major AI companies use llms.txt files to decide what content should enter their training datasets.

It is possible that this changes over time. As agents become a larger part of how people browse websites, shop, conduct research, and use online services, making a website easier for them to understand may become increasingly valuable.

A clear llms.txt file could eventually help agents identify the right content, understand how a brand describes itself, and connect that brand with specific products, services, or use cases.

In theory, broader and more consistent exposure to this information could contribute to stronger brand associations and better model recall over time. But today, that remains a possibility rather than a proven benefit.

Should you add one?

There is little downside to adding an llms.txt file. It is inexpensive to create, easy to maintain, and already useful for some AI agents.

Just keep expectations realistic.

It should be considered an AI accessibility and readiness feature, not an AI SEO tactic. It may help agents navigate your website, but it will not compensate for weak content, poor website structure, limited brand authority, or a lack of credible mentions elsewhere online.

The websites most likely to benefit today are those with technical documentation, APIs, large knowledge bases, or content frequently accessed by AI agents.

For other businesses, adding the file is still reasonable. It is a small step that may become more important as AI agents play a larger role in how websites are discovered and used.

A practical approach to AI visibility

At Visibly AI, we believe llms.txt is worth considering as a small AI-readiness measure — but it should not distract from the factors that matter more: useful content, a crawlable website, clear brand information, and credible mentions across the web.

Visibly AI helps Shopify brands understand where their products appear in AI-generated answers, why competitors may be more visible, and what they can do to improve.
